CHAPTER TEN

“You do realize you’ve looked outside five times in the last ten minutes, right? We could sit on the patio if you’re expecting him to jog past. I’ve still got about thirty minutes.” Kate slipped on her hat and sunglasses. Her bags were packed by the front door and she had a car coming to take her to the airport. “In fact, I’d like to get a glimpse of the guy that has you all twidipated.”

“Twidipated? Is that even a real word? Do you mean twitterpated?” Trent couldn’t help but look outside again. He grabbed his coffee off the counter and tried to look anywhere else.

“Hell, I don’t know. If it’s not a real word, it should be. I like the way it sounds, and it fits you perfectly.”

“How?”

“You’re all aflutter by some guy who has got to be pretty damn hot to snag your attention this hard. I’ve never seen you like this.” She opened the back door and looked over her shoulder. “Come on, let’s go out here so you can focus.”

Trent hated being so transparent, but it had been days since he’d seen Jace and their—whatever it was—was still so new, he wanted to be with him all the time. Even if it was just a glimpse of that hot body jogging along the beach. He followed her outside and settled onto one of the blue lounge chairs.

The scent of coffee as he held the cup to his nose blended well with the cool, salty morning breeze. The sound of the surf and seagulls was a treat to the ears as well. They were both silent for a few moments.

“I love it here,” Kate finally breathed. “I’m considering picking up a vacation spot somewhere close by. Have you thought about trying to get this

place permanently?”

“Not this one, because I’ve already asked if they were willing to sell instead of rent and they aren’t. But possibly another.”

“And that would be because of your Jace?”

“I’m not sure he’s my Jace.”

“But you want him to be.”

He looked at her and smiled, purposely not thinking about the major obstacles they faced if he were to make the man permanently his. But it didn’t stop him wanting. “Yeah, I do.”

She whooped and scared one of the seagulls that took off with a startled squawk.

Trent shook his head as he crossed his bare ankles. He wore a pair of loose basketball shorts with an old Nine Inch Nails T-shirt, and he thought about how comfortable Kate made him feel. He’d always been able to be himself with her—well, mostly. He should have trusted her with his sexuality a long time ago, and he could tell she was still slightly hurt that he hadn’t. He wanted to introduce her to Jace, knowing the man would be a little star-struck, but that he’d probably love her just as much as Trent did. It was hard not to—she didn’t have the narcissistic air that some stars of her caliber did.

And speaking of the man, he saw his long form jogging along the beach, a happily barking Ripley running along beside him.
